Brecon Beacons Reserve

Powys, Wales, United Kingdom

Northern Sky Protected Haven

Designated in 2013 as Wales' first International Dark Sky Reserve, the Brecon Beacons National Park covers 1,347 square kilometers of high mountain plateaus, ancient valleys, and pristine reservoirs. Strict dark sky protection policies keep light pollution tightly controlled throughout the surrounding communities.

Prime Stargazing Target Highlights

  • Northern Deep-Sky Treasures: Clear sightlines to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), the Triangulum Galaxy (M33), and the Great Orion Nebula (M42).
  • Milky Way Arch: Autumn and winter nights bring the dense band of our galaxy directly over the central mountain ridge.
  • Aurora Borealis Displays: Strong geomagnetic activity (Kp 5+) regularly triggers vivid northern lights along the northern horizon.

Top Field Locations & Access

Popular public observation laybys include Usk Reservoir, Crai Reservoir, Llangorse Lake, and the Libanus Mountain Centre. These sites feature flat staging ground for tripod setups and low horizon obstruction.
